South Side VFD Receives Fire Engine Donation From Unicoi VFD
UNICOI COUNTY, TN- In emergency services, mutual aid is a term that is commonly seen as helping a fellow emergency crew. Last week, the mutual aid between two local fire departments extended beyond the traditional sense, and, thanks to one station’s donation, it led to a home being saved from being destroyed by fire.
Just weeks ago, Unicoi Volunteer Fire Department stepped up to assist South Side Volunteer Fire Department by donating one of its used fire engines that was set to be sold soon.
Earlier in 2009, the main fire engine for the Temple Hill station of SSVFD was retired because of transmission failure. A reserve engine, a 1977 Chevrolet engine, was put to use for a couple months, but that truck started experiencing carburetors problems, overheating and brake issues.
The first truck was estimated to cost more than $10,000 to repair and department finances could not afford to fix either truck.
