Single Digit Temperatures Can Pose Problems For Firefighters

0

JOHNSON CITY, TN- Posted January 05, 2010. The temperatures in the area are in the single digits for overnight lows and the frigid trend is predicted to continue for the next several days with an additional chance of snow in the forecast as well. It is good news if you are one of the many school kids who are getting what amounts to an extra-long Christmas Holiday break, but not so good if you are a firefighter trying to do your job in the freezing cold.

“We rely on water, so anytime we get below 32 degrees, it presents a challenge to us,” City Fire Captain Mark Scott said. “This truck gives us trouble in the single digits, we have problems with the pumps freezing while the truck is in transit. We also have trouble with the lines freezing on the ground while we are fighting the fire.”
